Titles, cups and quarter-final in Europe
Coming of the MTel mobile telephone operator in the structures of the most popular Bulgarian football club made the contribution of the football players still brighter. Financial stability, order and discipline give serious advantage of the Levski players towards the other Bulgarian teams. Three consecutive titles are quick to come “trimmed” with two doubles on the home stage. Appointment of the Serb expert Ljupko Petrovic gives new vision to the team that changes entirely its appearance in two years only playing significant part not only in the Bulgarian football but on the European stage also.
Indisputably the great “blue” return is marked by the classical win over the Croatian grand team Hajduk (Split) in front of overcrowded stands of the Georgi Asparuhov Stadium. The blue fans start dreaming of new wins but the match with the great Juventus (Torino) ended 1:3 takes them quickly back to earth. But the draw in Torino gives new reasons for happiness and hopes. The names of Dimitar Ivankov, Georgi Ivanov, Alexander Alexandrov, Serge Yoffou, Stanimir Stoilov and Asen Nikolov begin to establish in the team.
Fate turns twice its back on “the blues” in their struggle to enter the European Champions Cup sending Levski against the Turkish Besiktas and Galatasaray teams.
In Istanbul started the great return of the blue fans on the European playgrounds. Due to easy to explain reasons the greater part of them could not travel out of the country but after the downfall of the communist regime the Levski fans are free to support their favourites all over Europe and the world. For a third successive year Levski is just one goal short of jumping over the qualification of the Champions League and not the obstacle is the reputable former winner of the Champion Clubs’ Cup Dinamo ( Kiev). Nevertheless, through those years “the blues” played many important and prestige matches against Brondby (Denmark), Sturm (Austria), Slavia (Prague), Chelsea and Liverpool (England).
After Petrovic the helm of the team is taken for short by Dimitar Dimitrov – “Herro” and the team under the leadership thereof gains new title and cup of the country. For counted months on the Gerena playground landed also Vladimir Fedotov to be replaced by Ljupko Petrovic. According to the expectations the title is “blue” again. Elin Topuzakov, Dimitar Telkiyski, Ilian Stoyanov, Miodrag Pantelic, Sasa Simonovic, Georgi Chilikov and Georgi Petkov are strengthening their positions in the team.
Frequent changes of coaches – Ljupko, Herro, Fedotov, Georgi Todorov, Abramchik, Muslin and Georgi Vasilev, do not lead to positive results and therefore the greatest successes in that period are one title and two national cups.
In 2004 the management of the team decided to introduce series of changes. Stanimir Stoilov, former football player of “the blues” came back to Levski as head coach. Series of experienced football players were dismissed, others were sold and their places were taken by young talents from the school of team – Domovchiyski, Niki Mihaylov, Lacho Baltanov, Zhivko Milanov, Niki Dimitrov, Mariyan Ognyanov, the exotic pearls Lucio Wagner and Richard Eromoigbe, the Frenchman Cedric Bardon and the Croatian back Igor Tomashic. The prodigal son Hristo Yovov and the staying young Daniel Borimirov returned to the team and as though everything good started therefrom. Whyω Ask Auxerre, Marseille, Artmedia and Udinese – they know best. For the fifth time in the history of the team Levski reached to quarter final in European tournament and blue fans flooded over the Old Continent. With this historical march in Europe winning of the title for 2006 inBulgaria was the most natural thing that might happen in the days preceding the World Championship in Germany.
